Publisher, Crytivo alongside the development team, Soda Den are excited to announce it’s been
a fruitful last couple days for Roots of Pacha. The game has been fully funded on Kickstarter, hit
their first stretch goal, and had their trailer released on IGN.

One of the major influences of Roots of Pacha is the book The Clan of the Cave Bear, a series
about prehistoric people's life. Soda Den were inspired by the idea of being the first to “make an
ax” and the “first to develop irrigation.” They wanted crafting to be a part of the story, not just
something that's fun. They developed the game from a place of wanting to play games together
so knew that community would be an important staple of the experience as well. When you earn
“currency” you aren’t wracking up gold, you're increasing “contribution points” that allow you to
“discuss ideas'' with quest givers. They are members of your Clan, who the player cooperates
with to achieve things that would be impossible alone. Community is not a buzz word but one of
the foundations of the game.

And in this case life imitates art and it will be Kickstarter and that community that allow the game
to be taken to the next level.

The farming sim genre has been exploding since ConcernedApe released Stardew Valley.
Almost every farming game is compared to his work. That one day the comparison might
become a moniker for the genre itself, “Stardew-like.” Not unlike the genre defining games that
lead to Souls-like, rogue-like, and metroidvanias. He inspired thousands of players and creators
around the world and the brothers of Soda Den are certainly two of them. They grew up playing
Harvest Moon and have fond memories of sharing a controller and were eager to play together
when Stardew Valley Co-Op came out. But like other creatives they wanted to make their own
mark on the genre. My Time at Portia put a heavier emphasis on crafting and building while
Coral Island plans to add ecology to the mix. It’s exciting to bring a Stone Age and evolution
focused spin to this genre defining time.

It’s inevitable to think of Nintendo when talking about farming sims, the brand itself evokes this
nostalgia unlike any other platform. Even if the Soda Den brothers first fell in love with Harvest
Moon on PS1, they had to play all previous ones on the Nintendo platforms, and the newer ones
as well (Harvest Moon SNES, Harvest Moon 3, Harvest Moon Friends of Mineral Town, Harvest
Moon DS, Harvest Moon Trio of Towns, Harvest Moon Tree of Tranquility).

“Ever since playing our first Harvest Moon with my brother, we knew we would enjoy it double if
we could play together. We found ourselves among other siblings, friends, and couples out
there with the same dream, and so we embarked on this journey to develop Roots of Pacha and
expand this great genre, of farm sims and co-op farm sims, to new horizons. We can’t wait to
see it in our hands on Switch.”
