Monster Hunter: Rise

PC

On 03/28/2021 Monster Hunter Rise was released time-exclusively for Nintendo Switch and was finally released for PC on 01/12/2022. I took a look at the game from developer and publisher Capcom and would like to tell you something about the PC port.

Porting and implementation:

Although technically the Nintendo Switch is far from being able to keep up with PCs or current consoles, Nintendo got the game time-exclusive for its console. Even then, Monster Hunter Rise was already developed to a higher resolution and downscaled, which made it possible to implement a good PC port that also looks very good in 4K resolution.

Graphics and details

However, if you take a closer look at the port, you will immediately notice that many smaller details are missing, this is not only noticeable in the game world, but also in the monsters. While in Monster Hunter: World the world was very lush and bursting with vegetation, Monster Hunter Rise looks rather bare and boring. At least the frames are better now, because in the PC version you can expect smooth 60 FPS, except for the cutscenes, which run in a lower resolution, which is noticeable, just like some icons in the game that look a bit blurry and muddy.

KeyBinding and Controller

You can customize your keyboard controls in Monster Hunter Rise and use them like in Monster Hunter: World, but for me personally this was too complicated, because in some places the mouse and keyboard controls are very demanding and I would not like to break my fingers, which somehow reminded me of the old controls of the first Tomb Raider games.  I clearly prefer the controller control, which works very well and without breaking fingers. The only drawback here was the camera during fights, which you couldn't swing back and forth very well, so you can lose track.

No Cross Play and Save

Monster Hunter Rise already played very well in multiplayer on the Switch, and although the PC community is not exactly small, there are problems finding players for the group quests from time to time. I had therefore wished for cross play, but unfortunately this is not offered. So if you have buddies who have the game on the Switch, you still can't play together with them. Players who played Monster Hunter Rise on the Switch back in the day will also not get Cross Save, which means if you buy it again on PC you will have to start the game from the beginning. No upgrades, weapons, or anything else will be carried over from your Switch save. During my tests in multiplayer, the servers ran very smoothly, but searching can take a long time and require several attempts. The fastest time was usually around 10 pm.

Summary

Fans of Monster Hunter: World will also get their money's worth in Monster Hunter Rise, but will have to accept some sacrifices on the PC, such as less detailed game areas and monsters. The PC version is up to date with update 3.3 and will receive the missing missions over the next few weeks. Starting with the new expansion, Capcom promises to release all content at the same time as the Switch, such as free updates and new missions. The multiplayer works stably, at least I did not have any problems except for the player search, which can take a long time depending on the time of day. However, if you are hoping for cross play and cross save, you are unfortunately out of luck, because Capcom does not currently support either. PC players can look forward to stable 60 FPS (except for cutscenes), keybinding and a higher resolution as well as better graphics.
