BAFL (Brakes Are For Losers) Review

Developer: Oudidon/ Genre: Arcade racer, Indie

The Basics

BAFL (Brakes Are For Losers) is an oddly named love letter to the classic, quarter-munching multiplayer racing games from the olden days, like Championship Sprint. You pick a car from a wide variety of designs and types, strap yourself in, and put the pedal to the metal, as you jockey for position against up to seven competitors, seeing who can cross the finish line first and in one piece (that last part is important)!

Roll hard in a few quick, basic-style races, or opt for the longer campaign, where you can use your winnings to pimp out and improve your ride. Use your boost to secure your lead or make up for lost time, and run over repair & power-up icons to make life a bit easier on you and your ride.

The Story & Flow

Drive in either direction as you race your face off, hauling ass in brake-less cars with limited handling capacities across ten circuit tracks, constantly smashing and redlining your way to victory (or pathetic defeat). You have to grab as many power-ups as you can before your enemies do, taking advantage of any edge you can, as you fight your way to the finish line; chuck bombs at your foes, use power-ups to reverse their controls, and impede their vision by causing the screen to go all blurry and pixelated... yeah, this is not a game where you make a lot of friends. Once you do enough damage to a car, the driver will be forced out of the race for as long as it takes to regenerate enough "health" to get back on the track. If you find yourself in a similar situation, low on health and about to “die”, you can simply pull into the pit-stop near the starting line for a full-on repair. Whichever way you decide to go, you’ll lose precious seconds in the race, and enemies can always come along and boot you out of the repair pit by simply ramming you. Of course, the fun comes when you turn the tables on them...

Controls

Both keyboard and controllers are fully supported.

Graphics & Sound:

BAFL looks and feels like one of the old-school Sprint games. The graphics aren't mind-blowing, but they are well done in the homage way they are presented, the attack graphics are creative, and the car variety is more then enough to make each one stand out. The sound is cheerful and bouncy and it fits well as you race along, dealing damage and sliding corners.

Summary

This is a pretty fun game that is clearly made with love by fans of the genre. It doesn't break any molds or set any records, but it's a fun piece of nostalgia to play with your buddies.
