In Pacific Rim, Earth is at war with the Kaiju, colossal sea monsters that came from an interdimensional portal on the bottom of the Pacific Ocean. To combat the monsters, humanity unites to create the Jaegers, gigantic, badass humanoid mechas, each controlled by at least two pilots, whose minds are joined by a mental link. Focusing on the war's later days, the story follows Raleigh Becket, a washed-up Jaeger pilot called out of retirement and teamed with rookie pilot Mako Mori as part of a last-ditch effort to defeat the Kaiju.
After the events of the first movie, it seems that the Jaeger's have been retired, in a classic, "we got rid of the threat so we never have to worry again" type of move. Of course, that isn't going to stay the case, and I'm sure a new generation of pilots will have to overcome self-doubt and fear, possibly led by a veteran who will say things like, "I knew it wasn't over", before heroically sacrificing himself for the younger pilots, and possibly passing on some kind of artifact that will be the final piece of the puzzle in the battle to take out the earth-killing assholes. You just watch.
"I can tell you that the vision of this movie was to build upon and expand upon the universe," Boyega said in a very obvious fashion at last year at New York Comic Con. "What I wanted to see after Pacific Rim is what we see in this movie."
The film opens March 23, and Steven S. DeKnight is directing the sequel to Guillermo Del Toro's 2013 film.
